For Parents & Carers

Medical Information

Students who feel ill during the school day should firstly report to their teacher who will press their Little Green Button.  A member of roaming Senior Leadership Team will then attend to assess them.  All of our SLT are qualified First Aiders.

Parents will be notified immediately if their child needs to go home.  It is important that students follow these procedures and do not phone home themselves.

Medicines at School

Medicines should only be brought into school when absolutely necessary—where it would be harmful to a child’s health if the medication is not administered during the school day.

To help us support all students' safely, we ask parents and carers to inform us if their child is taking any controlled medication at home.

Most children will experience short-term medical needs at some point. Students should not carry medication on their person. If your child requires medication, such as antibiotics, the school can supervise its administration and store it securely.

To do this, parents or carers must complete the “Agreement to Administer Medicine” form (available upon request from the School Office) and bring it, along with the medication, to Reception.  Prescribed medication should be provided in its original packaging.  Please note that staff cannot give any medication without written parental consent.

While the school can provide paracetamol when necessary, we ask that students on a regular treatment plan for paracetamol supply the required amount for the treatment period. A completed Parental Consent form must indicate the prescribed dose and timing as advised by a healthcare professional.

Staff may refuse to administer paracetamol if a student appears to be taking it excessively or outside of the prescribed plan. In such cases, parents will be informed immediately.

Medical Tracker

We have introduced a system called Medical Tracker to log the administration of medication to students.  In addition to calling home for consent to give Paracetamol or Calpol, we will also log this on your child's Medical Tracker record which will automate an email home confirming the time and dose administered.  This will provide a real-time update on your child's health events and will streamline our internal processes, ensuring we have accurate and up-to-date information to support student health needs.

In due course, any medication held in school for a student will also be logged on their record and automated reminders sent home when such medication is nearing expiry.

EpiPens and Inhalers

With the above in mind, the school is able to hold spare EpiPens and Inhalers for your child, if required. These will be stored securely and made available for your child in case of an emergency.

If you would like us to keep a spare Inhaler or EpiPen at school, please:

  • Provide the medication in its original packaging, clearly labelled with your child’s name.
  • Ensure it is in date and replaced before the expiry date.
  • Inform us of any changes to your child’s medical

If you have any questions or would like to arrange dropping off spare medication, please contact the School Office.

Our SENCO, Miss Hanley, has overall responsibility for medical needs and can be contacted by email to mhanley@stalhamhigh.org.uk.  Staff are unable to dispense any medication without parental written consent.

The school will only accept medicines that have been prescribed by a doctor, dentist, nurse prescriber or pharmacist prescriber.  Medicines should always be provided in the original container as dispensed by a pharmacist and include the prescriber’s instructions for administration and dosage.
